EU REACH Regulation

REACH, a European Union Regulation (EC 1907/2006) on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, entered into force on June 1, 2007.

One objective of this regulation is to improve, within the overall framework of sustainable development, the protection of human health and the environment from the risks of chemical substances. Sharp supports this objective and, under the Sharp Code of Conduct, is taking a proactive approach to comply with the regulations.

According to REACH Article 33.1 and 33.2 (duty to communicate information on substances in articles), suppliers are required to provide the recipients and, upon request, the consumers with information about the SVHC substance, when an article contains a substance from the SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) candidate list according to Article 59.1 or the Regulation 1907/2007 in a concentration of more than 0.1% of the weight of the article.

To comply with the requirement of Article 33, Sharp has asked its suppliers for information on SVHC. To date, Sharp’s finding is as follows:

The following parts can contain substances of the current candidate list in a concentration that exceeds 0.1% by weight:

As the related substance are chemically bound and stabilized in the product it does not pose a risk to the user under normal conditions of use.

As to other Sharp products groups (such as TVs, audio devices, MWOs, air conditioners, refrigerators, calculators, fax devices as well as consumables for copiers/MFD) which we are currently selling in Europe, the limit of 0.1% by weight is not exceeded according to our current best knowledge (state: Feb. 2010).

Sharp will continue to work closely with its suppliers to receive relevant information earliest possible and to ensure that substances of the candidate list will not be used in the future. We assume that we will be able to offer our complete product range free of the substance of the candidate list latest by mid 2010.
